“ELENI? IT’S NIKOS. I just got back from a trial run and saw that you’d called. Were you able to work your charms and get my brother to rethink his plans?”

“No. I’m afraid my charms have never worked on Stasio when it came to something I really wanted. For now and forever, Ari’s a closed subject.”

“I was afraid of that,” he muttered.

“At this point, all I can hope for is that Ari’s too attached to his foster parents to want to live with Stella.”

“They have five years on my sister. There’s no way Ari will want to leave them. Where’s Stasio now?”

“He and Ari flew to Andros a couple of hours ago.”

“Why the hell didn’t you go with them?”

“Because it wouldn’t do any good. When Ari’s around, Stasio scarcely knows I exist I’ll go this evening when I won’t have to fight for his attention.”

“You have to hang in there, Eleni.”

“What do you think I’ve been doing for the past two years!” she cried out in exasperation. “You know very well this whole thing has been a fait accompli from the beginning.” After a hesitation, she said, “I think you know something else, too.”

“What are you talking about?”

Eleni sucked in her breath. “How long has Stasio been seeing Rachel Maynard behind my back?”

“Who?”

“Rachel Maynard, the redheaded American who went to boarding school with Stella.”

After a long silence Nikos let go with a burst of uninhibited laughter. “Good Lord, Eleni. I don’t know how you happened to hear about her, but believe me, no man would be interested in that scheming little parasite, least of all my brother.”

“Don’t lie to me, Nikos,” she said in a shaking voice. “This is too important.”

The laughter subsided. “I swear I’m not lying. What’s this all about?”

“Suppose you tell me. Do you deny that she spent some time at the villa in Chamonix with you and Stella years ago?”

“I’m not denying anything.”

“Then she really was there with you?”

“Yes. She made certain Stella brought her along.”

“Are you aware that Stasio has maintained a relationship with her ever since?”

“Come on, Eleni. That’s impossible! He doesn’t know her. He never even met her.”

“Really. Then how come he knew all about your little affair with her?”

“My what? Eleni, you’re not making any sense. Rachel Maynard was a pathetic-looking creature. A loser. My ski buddies thought the same thing. I told Stella to get rid of her or no guys would come near.

“That’s why she gave up the baby, you know. So she could have another chance at life. With Rachel hanging around for whatever she could get out of my sister, that wasn’t about to happen. If Stasio intimated I went to bed with her, it means Stella told lies behind my back as a form of revenge.”

“According to both Rachel and Stasio, she lost track of you—and I guess Stella—during the intervening years. That’s why she went to Stasio’s New York office—to get your address so she could look you up while she was on vacation.”

“That’s preposterous!”

“If you’re telling me the truth, my worst fears have just been realized.
